Rabbi Royi Shaffin, our new Rabbi and Education Director, was born in Los Angeles, CA into a bilingual Israeli-American family. Rabbi Shaffin studied at the University of Judaism in Los Angeles and at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, where he was ordained. He is also accredited as a Jewish Educator by the Bureau of Jewish Education in Los Angeles and is an active member of the Jewish Educators Assembly. Before coming to Richmond, Rabbi Shaffin served as Rabbi and Religious School Principal at Temple Beth Or in Brick, NJ. He has taught synagogue religious school at every grade level from pre-school through high school. Rabbi Shaffin has edited a Siddur for use in religious school settings and constructed unique curricula for teaching Hebrew, Bar/Bat Mitzvah preparation, and for special needs Bar/Bat Mitzvah training. He enjoys Israeli martial arts, Hebrew Calligraphy, Biblical Archaeology, and giving multi-media (and in person) tours of Israel. Rabbi Shaffin and his wife, Shoshanna, have three young daughters – Netanya, Elianna, and Kinneret. Shoshanna has a Master’s degree in Jewish Studies and is the Director of the Women's Division and Israel/Oversees Programs at the Jewish Community Federation of Richmond.
