Ancient identification seals were a way to sign documents, indicate ownership, and transact business. Some were also beautiful enough to wear as jewelry. We will begin this class with the Biblical narrative about Judah and Tamar (Genesis 38:15-18) where are told that Judah gave Tamar “his seal and cord, and his staff.” We will also look at other narratives involving personal seals and how they were used. Join us as we dig into archaeology and Biblical texts to shed light on these tiny, but valuable, artifacts.
